My Dad sent me this devotional today about "It is Well With My Soul". It is what my heart is singing tonight…
John 16:33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
One of the question that is asked when something bad happens is " why is it that God allows His people to go through such sufferings and calamities." What will you and I say about God when things go bad for us?
The songwriter of the well-known song had a harrowing experience, and this is what influenced him to write the song. He was a lawyer who had amassed wealth through his labor but lost all his properties through a fire. Surprisingly, his trust in God was not affected a bit. As if that was not enough, while crossing the Atlantic, all four of his daughters died in a collision with another ship. His wife survived and sent him the now famous telegram, "Saved alone."What a tragedy! What a calamity in the life of a Christian. When he received the message, he was never worried about his trust in His God but wrote the wonderful song which said, "Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say, It is well, it is well, with my soul."
Amazing as it may seem, God has truly taught us to say, "it is well" when we encounter unfortunate circumstances. He promises us in His Word that He told us these things, so that we may have peace. In this world we will have trouble; however, we should take heart because Christ has overcome the world through His perfect life, His sacrificial death, and victorious resurrection. What a comforting and refreshing message for all of us as we are going through.
We need the Word of God to strengthen us each day of our lives so as not to lean on our own strength but to put all our trust in the Lord who will guide our paths. In this regard, when calamity befalls us, we are sure God will empower us and we can also say, "It is, indeed, well with my soul."Dear Lord, strengthen us each day by Your Word and help us to put our trust in You always. Amen.

You know...... there is a statement in this post that is so powerful ! It is letting the Lord strengthen us EACH day..... Growing strong in the Lord is in the "each day" journey.... We live in an instant age, and we cannot over look our spirit man until crisis comes...... We must allow HIM to strengthen us EACH day......
Good for you girl...... Wonderful post
That is beautiful Karen! It is well with my soul! Hallelujah!
Blessings Karen...When we know the background of these great songs, we can take solace in the words:
IT IS WELL WITH MY SOUL
Halleluia! May this beautiful song
keep your heart singing. How kind of your dad to send it! Enjoy TSMSS and have a wonderful weekend!
Karen,
Your words are so powerful and true. I need God's word everyday to be a reminder of His faithfulness.
He even whispers to me from time to time "Remember your times in trouble...I was there." It gives me hope.
Oh, Karen, what a powerful word! To be so dedicated, so faithful and full of faith that nothing, absolutely nothing, ever disturbs our confidence in God!
We know of a missionary who, many years ago, was in a car accident in Iran. He and his wife survived, but all three of their children were killed instantly.
His faith in God never wavered. When the missionary finally went home from the hospital, the first thing he did was sit down at his piano and sing and play "Great Is Thy Faithfulness."
I heard him tell this testimony several years ago while in chapel at Bible College, and I have never forgotten it. The other day, I ran across it again.
Thank you for sharing today. Many blessings to you, and may the Lord, our God, keep you in His tender loving care.

May we always have a hunger and thirst for the Word of God!!! He is so faithful in everyway, even in the storms of life. It is in the valley that we grow. Blessings to you, Robin
This has always been one of my very favorite hymns because of the circumstances under which it is written!!
I've seen that lovely video before, in fact, I think I have it on my blog. That is an amazing hymn he wrote.
I LOVE this song! Sandi Patty has a great version of this.
Okay, I gotta answer the first question...before, I would question GOD and wanted to die. But GLORY TO GOD, HE changed me. Now, my answer would be, "Bring it on, FATHER" hehehe! just kidding! GOD's Purpose is so amazing!
Our pastor shared the story of song writer. Amazing, huh? Really amazing. He has the heart of Paul. A true follower of JESUS CHRIST.
True. So true. You, my friend, are gifted. May you and your family be blessed abundantly by GOD. You are a wonderful blessing to me.
iLoveYouSoMuch, my dear sister in CHRIST! P.U.S.H.
Praise the Lord Sister for it is well, it is well with my soul!
Bless you dear one.
Karen---I LOVE that! I had read/heard in a Bible Study by Beth Moore---"Believing God" this:
"Suffering has an unavoidable role in the heart/life of a believer in the new covenant" (or something close to that).---We all will suffer---Believers and nonbelievers---But it's what we allow God to do...as this song writer said..."it is well with my soul"
I love that song..it ministers. Especially knowing it's origin.
Bless you dear sister!
Thanks for this beautiful reminder that Jesus has OVERCOME all the tribulation...and we will too--in Christ.
I love that hymn too.
